What is an Actuated Ball Valve?

In industrial facilities, fluid control is critical for ensuring production processes run safely, efficiently, and without interruption. Failure to manage the fluid at the right time, in the right quantity, and at the correct pressure can lead to reduced product quality, energy losses, and even serious safety risks. For this reason, in modern industry, manual control elements are increasingly being replaced by valve solutions compatible with automation and remote control. Leading these solutions are actuated ball valves.

An actuated ball valve is a type of valve that contains a perforated sphere (ball) inside its body, and the flow is controlled by rotating this ball with the help of an actuator. When the ball aligns with the pipe axis, the flow is fully open, while a 90-degree rotation completely stops the flow. This quarter-turn motion allows ball valves to provide fast and reliable shutoff. The actuator integration enables this movement to occur automatically, without the need for manual intervention.

The actuators used in these valves are generally divided into two types: electric and pneumatic. Electric actuators operate using electrical power and are preferred in applications that require precise control. Pneumatic actuators operate with compressed air and offer fast response times as well as safe use in explosive environments. The type of actuator to be selected should be determined based on the system’s operating conditions and automation infrastructure.

One of the most important advantages of actuated ball valves is their high sealing performance. Thanks to their spherical design, they provide minimal leakage when fully closed, a feature that is particularly critical in controlling gases and chemical fluids. Additionally, the straight flow path inside the valve results in low pressure loss, contributing to more efficient system operation.

This type of valve is commonly preferred in applications where manual intervention is difficult or risky. Actuated ball valves are widely used in chemical and petrochemical plants, power plants, water and wastewater treatment facilities, HVAC systems, and food and beverage production lines. In processes that operate continuously and require automation, the ability to control the valve remotely provides a significant operational advantage.

Actuated ball valves can operate fully compatible with automation systems such as PLC and SCADA. With open-close position feedback, signal outputs, and timing functions, processes can be monitored and controlled in real time. This not only reduces the risk of malfunctions but also allows for more effective maintenance planning. Additionally, the ability to automatically close the valve in emergency scenarios significantly enhances facility safety.

When selecting the right actuated ball valve, many technical criteria must be considered. Key factors include the type of fluid, operating pressure and temperature, valve body material, sealing elements, and the actuator’s torque rating. An incorrectly selected valve or actuator can negatively impact system performance and lead to increased maintenance costs over time.

From an energy efficiency perspective, actuated ball valves provide significant benefits. Automatic control prevents unnecessary flow, ensures more balanced process operation, and optimizes energy consumption. In applications that require frequent opening and closing, they deliver more consistent and controlled performance compared to manual valves.

In conclusion, actuated ball valves are an ideal solution for all industrial systems where speed, safety, and precise control are priorities. With the right product selection and proper automation integration, these valves enhance process efficiency, reduce operating costs, and become an indispensable component of modern industrial facilities.
