What is a Worm Gear?
A worm gear is a means of reducing motion energy or power in a mechanical system. It is generally used to reduce or change the rotated power of motors. It can also be used to increase the speed and torque of mechanical systems. Worm Gears consist of a series of gears and shafts and are usually made of metallic materials. Its usage areas are very wide and it can be used in industrial machinery and equipment, vehicles, household appliances and even some toys.
It provides 80% ease of movement in systems with 90° rotation in ball, butterfly and plug valves. It is recommended to be used especially in DN150 – DN300 sizes. It is mandatory to use in diameters of DN350 and above.
Where is the Worm Gear Used?
Unox quarter-turn mechanical worm gears are suitable for use in general industrial applications, chemical processes, HVAC and irrigation systems. It can be used in a very wide range and is used in many different industrial and commercial applications. For example:
- It is used to regulate the working conditions and loads of industrial machinery and equipment. For example, in a crane system, it is used to convert the power returned by the motor into the speed and torque that will move the crane.
- It is used to regulate the powers of engines that help vehicles move. For example, it is used to convert the power returned by the engine that moves the rear wheels of a car into the speed and torque at which the wheels can move.
- It is also used to regulate the working conditions and loads of household appliances. For example, it is used to convert the power returned by the motor of a vacuum cleaner into the speed and torque at which the vacuum can move.
These examples show only a few uses, but in reality there are many more.
